Before you write
Three lines make almost any report answerable on the first reply: what you did, what you expected, and what happened instead. If it is a bug, add your app version from Settings → About, your iPhone model, and your iOS version.
Please do not send screenshots of anything private just to illustrate a bug — a description of the shape of the problem is nearly always enough, and your archive is nobody's business but yours.
Getting your archive out
Settings → Export Archive. It writes a zip holding your messages as JSON, the same messages again as plain text, and every photo, recording and document you have sent yourself. It is readable by any program and by a person, without this app — which is the point of it.
Export is not part of the trial restriction: it works whether or not you have bought the app, and it always will.
iCloud sync
Sync is off until you turn it on, in Settings → Sync with iCloud. Turned on, your archive is kept in your own private iCloud database and appears on your other iPhones signed in to the same Apple Account. Nobody else can read it, and there is no server of ours involved.
It says iCloud is unavailable
The app repeats what the system tells it. Check that you are signed in to iCloud, that iCloud Drive is on, and that Codex is allowed in Settings → your name → iCloud. A new archive can also take a few minutes to appear on a second device the first time.
I turned it off — what happens to what is already there?
This device stops syncing. What already reached iCloud stays there until you remove the app's data in your iCloud settings. Feeds and downloaded articles never sync at all.
The trial and the purchase
Codex is bought once and yours for good, on every iPhone signed in to your Apple Account. There is nothing to renew and nothing to cancel.
The trial runs for 14 days, and starting it acquires a free "14-day Trial" item on your Apple Account, which is what dates it. Reading, searching, organising and exporting your archive never expire — what the trial covers is putting new things into it: messages, photos, voice, files, reminders and fetching your feeds. When it ends, your archive is still there and still yours.
New phone, or the app forgot I bought it
Settings → Restore Purchase. That asks the App Store, under the Apple Account on the phone, and unlocks the app again. If it says it found nothing, check that the phone is signed in to the same Apple Account you bought with.
Refunds
Purchases are handled by Apple, so refunds are too: reportaproblem.apple.com. Write to us as well if something did not work — knowing why is more useful to us than the sale.
Reminders and alarms
A reminder is a local notification your own device schedules; nothing is sent to a server to deliver it. If reminders are not arriving, allow notifications for Codex in the Settings app — the app's own Settings screen says which of the three states you are in and offers to open it.
Wake me
A reminder set to Wake me is a real system alarm: it rings through Silent mode, through a Focus, on the Lock Screen, and with the app closed or force quit, the way the Clock app's alarms do. Without that permission it arrives as the loudest notification allowed instead, which the Silent switch and a Focus can still quieten — so set anything you cannot afford to sleep through in the Clock app as well.
Keeping a reminder off the Lock Screen
Settings → Show message in notification, turned off, makes a reminder say there is something to look at without showing what it says.
Voice and transcription
Recordings are transcribed on the device or not at all — Codex will not send a recording away to be read. If transcription is not happening, it is one of two things: speech recognition is switched off for Codex in the Settings app, or your language has no offline recogniser on this device. The app's Settings screen says which.
To transcribe one recording on its own, hold it and choose transcribe. The audio is never altered by this — the recording stays exactly as you made it.
Sending things in from other apps
Codex is in the iOS share sheet. From Safari, Photos, Files or anywhere else that shares, pick Codex and the link, text, photo, video or file lands in your archive at the moment you sent it — one item per share, because one attachment is one message and a message should be starrable, answerable and findable on its own.
Languages
The app is in English, Turkish, German, Spanish and French, and it follows the language your phone is set to. The reading it does of your messages — spotting a task, a question, a date — works in all five.
Deleting everything
Deleting the app removes its storage on the device. If you had iCloud sync on, remove the app's data in your iCloud settings as well. There is nothing held anywhere else: no account of ours to close and no copy to ask us to erase. The privacy policy is the long version of that.
Requirements
- iPhone, running iOS 26 or later.
- iCloud sync needs an Apple Account signed in on the device. It is optional.
- On-device transcription needs a language your iPhone can recognise offline.
